Happy New Year “Agriculture is and must always be the backbone of every economy”

TO THE FARMERS: Remember always that we are dependent on one another and we need to work together as a collective, especially during this time of precipitation and financial turmoil.

I wish to encourage many of us to minimize our dependency on others to produce food for us, especially imports of products that can well adapt to our local climate.

We can no longer run the risk of accommodating domestic and traditional farming. We need to advance to levels of producing more than what we can eat and having more to sell.

Itis not our responsibility to solve the socio-economic problems – it is the responsibility of government.

As farmers, we must pressurize the government to fulfil its responsibilities and supply implements and services and all that is needed for farmers to thrive in this sector so we can contribute to the growth of our country’s economy. Agriculture is and must always be the backbone of every economy.

We are blessed as a country to have a Head of State who is not only a farmer but a highly commercialized farmer and he also understands that there is money in the soil.

We should continue to treat each other as farmers fairly and with respect.

To the people of Zambia: Enjoy the quality produce of our farmers and support us in our efforts to produce food for all in Zambia. When all is said and done, farmers face challenges ranging from corruption to ever-increasing input costs.

Such challenges are in fact similar to what our forefathers experienced, and which they managed with perseverance and with faith.

We put our trust in God Almighty.
