THE concern by the Rabbit Association of Zambia (RAZ) in line with the scarcity of white meat on the Zambian market at the moment calls for concerted efforts from various stakeholders to amend the situation.
We are told by nutritionists that this type of meat does not only taste yummy but it has numerous health benefits for the people that are consuming it. Fine!
This is the reason why RAZ is calling upon as many farmers as possible to venture into rabbit rearing so that this delicacy can readily be available even in our biggest retail chain store outlets without much ado.
It is from this desire that the Rabbit Association of Zambia (RAZ) has the biggest vision of setting up a rabbit meat market which we say would be a good move.
“We want to work out a plan where we will gather all the Rabbit farmers and introduce a Rabbit meat market. We want to make it very easy for people who want to buy Rabbit meat to find it easily and even penetrate chain retail outlets such as shoprite,” explained Mr. Mbewe RAZ president.
And for this big dream to come to reality, we are told that rearing of these small ruminants is not a big deal because they don’t require much capital to begin with and the issues of fancy housing, large spaces as well as exotic type of food are not issues that cannot be a bother because in terms of food, rabbits can easily thrive purely on greens and survive very much okay in simple cages.
“Everyone can keep Rabbits. It’s something that is not very difficult to do. Rabbits just need food and they’re purely vegetarians surviving mainly on the greens.
“Rabbits don’t require a lot of space to keep them. One can keep 100 Rabbits in a 20m-by-20m space. This is a very fast business that everyone can do even school levels can venture into this kind of business and be able to raise money for their tertiary education,” disclosed RAZ president.
Moving forward indeed, it is very encouraging to the would-be rabbit farmers especially that the Rabbit Association of Zambia (RAZ) is very much committed to go a step further and a mile far by way of helping the beginners in rabbit rearing with all the information that is paramount to this kind of business.
Furthermore, according to nutritionists, rabbit meat is said to be very good for the people who consume it. They say that the meat is both delicious and aromatic, and this very kind of meat combines both healthy eating and good flavours.
As if that is not enough this type of meat is especially recommended for pregnant women and nursing mothers, for the young, the elderly and even sports enthusiast.
We are made to believe that rabbit meat contains proteins even higher than beef or chicken. It is excellent for body metabolism. Eating rabbit meat aids a varied and balanced diet.
